Luis Vargas   //  The supreme King of Bitterness
is infamous for his scandalous double entendres and fiery guitar riffs.
Raulín Rodríguez   //  The Chieftain of Bitterness
has a jagged lonliness in his voice that is the essence of "Amargue" (Blues) as this music was called.
Aridia Ventura   //  The Executioner
is known as ‘The Executioner’ because she anhilates Dominican men in her scornful songs. A botched operation blinded her and ended her career as the voice of women in bachata, but she was located and performs especially for us.

“Afrobachata”

Joan Soriano   //  The Duke
is a young, relatively unknown bachatero whose striking songs and guitar styling have a distinctively Haitian flavor.
Luis Segura   //  El Añoñaíto (The Cry Baby)
is reknown for his super-emotional stage antics and vicious steel string guitar-playing.
Eladio Romero Santos
was the first to play merengue on the guitar and his rip-roaring dance music had a huge impact on the next generation of bachateros. Eladio passed away last year, but his spirit lives on in this documentary.
Teodoro Reyes   //  The Wise Little Blind Man
sings of betrayal and revenge in his smokey growl and trademark porkpie hat.
Ramón Cordero   //  The Sparrow
is another luminary of the old school. His bittersweet vocals are very popular with the drinking crowd.
José Manuel Calderón
is considered to be the first one to become known for the guitar stylings and bitter songs that later would be called Amargue or Bachata. He is still just as lively as ever.
